The Fibre Alternative

Mount Waverley Secondary College

The roll out of a tablet program and a more web-based learning activities meant the Mount Waverley Secondary College had outgrown its heavily-contented fibre connection. Vertel's Etherwave service enabled cost effective connectivity, providing the the 100mbps capacity needed.

The Challenge

Although Mount Waverley Secondary College had a 50Mbps Department of Education fibre connection, a separate dedicated and uncontended circuit was required that would give the school the confidence in having Internet bandwidth available when it was needed and also provide data path redundancy. The installation and monthly usage costs being quoted by traditional fibre providers did not appear to be an option.

Mount Waverley Secondary College required a network that would:

  • Deliver an uncontended, reliable carrier-grade Internet connection.
  • Provide unlimited and unmetered Internet access with guaranteed SLAs.
  • Be highly scalable to cope with increasing bandwidth demands.
  • Work within the constraints of a public school budget.

Our Approach

Working with the incumbent integrator (Honeylight Consulting) we consulted with the school’s IT department to determine their current and future broadband requirements.

With a vision to provide all students with easy and reliable access to web based learning activities via laptops and tablets, they rapidly determined that the cost of installing additional fibre to the school along with the varying prices being quoted for monthly metered access was going to be prohibitive and well outside their budget.

The alternative was Vertel’s Netconnect Internet service delivered over carrier-grade microwave access and an MPLS fibre backhaul core. This scalable, fully managed service would deliver unmetered and unlimited Internet access with 99.95% service availability coupled with strict performance SLAs. Installation costs and lead times would also be significantly lower than those of fibre.

The Solution

To meet their immediate requirements Vertel installed an uncontended 50Mbps service that would cater for the school issued laptops and 700 iPads. The link will be upgraded to 100Mbps in December 2013 to accommodate for an additional 900 iPads being introduced for the 2014 school year. When complete, the school's network will be comprised of over 4,000 network connected devices.

  • High capacity and high performance symmetrical IP transit connection delivered over microwave access and MPLS fibre backhaul.
  • Fully managed and scalable service.
  • Strict performance SLAs and QoS guarantees.
  • 1:1 uncontended service with unlimited and unmetered Internet access.
  • 24/7/365.

The Results

Mount Waverley Secondary College now has a carrier-grade Internet connection that meets all of their current and future bandwidth and performance requirements. The whole project, from design to commissioning was done within two months, just in time for the 2013 school year.

Multimedia and other high bandwidth subjects that were limited in their scope prior to the network upgrade are now fully integrated into the curriculum and the move to eBooks, now accounting for 50% of all textbooks used in the school, has also been accelerated.

The school's enhanced IT capabilities will enable it to continue to be recognised as an established learning community, locally nationally and internationally.

We are very confident that we now have a network that provides us with all of the flexibility and control required to meet the demands that the migration to a digital world will place upon us in the years ahead.
